{"id":71,"date":"2007-09-14T15:45:20","date_gmt":"2007-09-14T13:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/blog\/?p=71"},"modified":"2007-09-14T15:46:37","modified_gmt":"2007-09-14T13:46:37","slug":"mintupdate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.linuxmint.com\/?p=71","title":{"rendered":"mintUpdate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new tool\u00a0called\u00a0mintUpdate is being designed at the moment as a replacement to the Ubuntu Update Manager and its notifier.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0new\u00a0tool\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0ready\u00a0for\u00a0Daryna\u00a0(Mint\u00a04.0).\u00a0It\u00a0will\u00a0look\u00a0like\u00a0the\u00a0Ubuntu\u00a0Update\u00a0Notifier\/Manager\u00a0but\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0few\u00a0differences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Security Updates will be tested by the Mint developers before they become available in mintUpdate<\/li>\n<li>Updates will be sorted in different categories and given different levels of confidence and emergency<\/li>\n<li>The Mint team will be able to input additional descriptions for the updates than the ones included in the packages themselves and these descriptions will appear in mintUpdate<\/li>\n<li>Some security updates (kernel, xorg.. etc)\u00a0will\u00a0appear\u00a0but\u00a0not\u00a0cause\u00a0notification\u00a0and\u00a0they\u00a0won&#8217;t\u00a0be\u00a0selected\u00a0by\u00a0default.\u00a0Related\u00a0risks\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0be\u00a0described\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0user\u00a0when\u00a0they\u00a0get\u00a0selected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The purpose of this tool will be to give automatic security updates to  users without letting them perform uneducated upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0Cassandra\u00a0and\u00a0previous\u00a0releases\u00a0the\u00a0Ubuntu\u00a0Update\u00a0Manager\u00a0was\u00a0bringing\u00a0security\u00a0updates\u00a0but\u00a0this\u00a0could\u00a0potentially\u00a0break\u00a0Linux\u00a0Mint.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0Celena,\u00a0stability\u00a0was\u00a0improved\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Ubuntu\u00a0Update\u00a0Manager\u00a0was\u00a0removed.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0Daryna\u00a0we&#8217;ll\u00a0introduce\u00a0mintUpdate\u00a0and\u00a0provide\u00a0the\u00a0best\u00a0out\u00a0of\u00a0both\u00a0worlds:\u00a0stability\u00a0and\u00a0security.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0great\u00a0advantage\u00a0of\u00a0mintUpdate\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0be\u00a0that\u00a0we&#8217;ll\u00a0be\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0do\u00a0that\u00a0without\u00a0managing\u00a0our\u00a0own\u00a0repositories,\u00a0just\u00a0by\u00a0following\u00a0and testing updates\u00a0and\u00a0providing\u00a0meta-information\u00a0to\u00a0mintUpdate\u00a0about\u00a0them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new tool\u00a0called\u00a0mintUpdate is being designed at the moment as a replacement to the Ubuntu Update Manager and its notifier.
