Create a system snapshot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use Timeshift to make a system snapshot before the upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If anything goes wrong, you can easily restore your operating system to its previous state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launch Timeshift from the application menu, follow the instructions on the screen to configure it and create a system snapshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Prepare for the upgrade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Disable your screensaver<\/li><li>If you installed Cinnamon spices (applets, desklets, extensions, themes), upgrade them from the System Settings<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Upgrade the operating system<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upgrading to Linux Mint 20.2 is relatively easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Update Manager, click on the Refresh button to check for any new version of mintupdate or mint-upgrade-info. If there are updates for these packages, apply them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launch the System Upgrade by clicking on &#8220;Edit-&gt;Upgrade to Linux Mint 20.2 Uma&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/4111\/mintupgrade1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/4111\/thumb_mintupgrade1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the instructions on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/4111\/mintupgrade2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/4111\/thumb_mintupgrade2.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If asked whether to keep or replace configuration files, choose to replace them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Convert the system with usrmerge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend you convert your system with usrmerge. This is done already for all fresh installations of Linux Mint 20.1 and 20.2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For information on usrmerge, read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedesktop.org\/wiki\/Software\/systemd\/TheCaseForTheUsrMerge\/\">https:\/\/www.freedesktop.org\/wiki\/Software\/systemd\/TheCaseForTheUsrMerge\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To convert your system, open a terminal and type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt install usrmerge<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Reboot the computer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the upgrade is finished, reboot your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Commonly asked questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If the upgrade is not available to you, check that you have the latest versions of mintupdate (5.7.3 or higher) and mint-upgrade-info (1.1.8 or higher) and restart the Update Manager by launching it again from the applications menu.<\/li><li>If the latest versions of mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info are not yet available in your mirrors, switch to the default repositories.<\/li><li>This happens rarely, but if you ever got locked and were unable to log back in, switch to console with CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, and type &#8220;killall cinnamon-screensaver&#8221; (or &#8220;killall mate-screensaver&#8221; in MATE).
