{"id":1949,"date":"2012-04-05T08:36:20","date_gmt":"2012-04-05T12:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.linuxmint.com\/?p=1949"},"modified":"2012-04-13T05:40:42","modified_gmt":"2012-04-13T09:40:42","slug":"lmde-update-pack-4-in-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.linuxmint.com\/?p=1949","title":{"rendered":"Update Pack 4 is out!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Note about server speed<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Current status:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The following servers are fully up to date with UP4:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Main Server: <span style=\"color: #339966;\">deb http:\/\/debian.linuxmint.com\/latest<\/span> (1Gbps, Colorado &#8211; USA)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Emergency cloud server: <span style=\"color: #339966;\">deb http:\/\/us.debian.linuxmint.com\/latest<\/span> (150Mbps, Texas &#8211; USA)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">RTS Informatique: <\/span><span style=\"color: #339966;\">deb http:\/\/mirror.rts-informatique.fr\/debian.linuxmint.com\/latest\/<\/span> (France)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">The synchronization between the server and the mirrors was resumed (3 mirrors at a time).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you experience issues or if you&#8217;re going through the update at the moment, don&#8217;t hesitate to connect to the IRC chatroom (irc.spotchat.org, #linuxmint-debian)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>Update Pack 4 was released as the \u201clatest\u201d update pack today. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>If you\u2019re not using Linux Mint Debian, please ignore this post.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Update Pack 4, the following significant changes occur which might cause regressions on your system:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gnome 2 gets &#8220;upgraded&#8221; to Gnome Shell<\/li>\n<li>The Linux kernel is upgraded to version 3.2<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Changing your repositories<\/h2>\n<p><em>Please skip this paragraph if you already updated your APT sources for Update Pack 3.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before you apply the updates for Update Pack 4, make sure you&#8217;re pointing to the correct repositories.<\/p>\n<p>Edit your APT sources by running the following command in the terminal:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>gksu gedit \/etc\/apt\/sources.list<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Within this file, replace the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Replace <strong>security.debian.org<\/strong> with <strong>debian.linuxmint.com\/latest\/security<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Replace <strong>debian-multimedia.org<\/strong> with <strong>debian.linuxmint.com\/latest\/multimedia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your APT sources, should now look like this:<\/p>\n<pre>deb http:\/\/packages.linuxmint.com\/ debian main upstream import\r\ndeb http:\/\/debian.linuxmint.com\/latest testing main contrib non-free\r\ndeb http:\/\/debian.linuxmint.com\/latest\/security testing\/updates main contrib non-free\r\ndeb http:\/\/debian.linuxmint.com\/latest\/multimedia testing main non-free<\/pre>\n<p>Save and close the file.<\/p>\n<h2>Using the Update Manager<\/h2>\n<h3>\u2026 to update itself<\/h3>\n<p>The Update Manager always updates itself before other packages. If you see an update for \u201c<strong>mintupdate-debian<\/strong>\u201c, accept it and wait for the Update Manager to restart itself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/1949\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/1949\/thumb_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>If there\u2019s a new Update Manager available, it will only list itself as an update<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>\u2026 to check your APT sources<\/h3>\n<p>At the time of writing this blog post, the latest version of  mintupdate-debian is 1.0.5. From this version onwards the Update Manager  is able to check your APT sources and tell you if they are properly  configured.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on the \u201cUpdate Pack Info\u201d button<\/li>\n<li>Make sure \u201cYour system configuration\u201d shows up as green and doesn\u2019t show any warnings or errors<\/li>\n<li>If you see a warning or an error, follow the instructions given and repeat the process until they\u2019re gone.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/1949\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/tmp\/blog\/1949\/thumb_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Check the system configuration and read the Update Pack information<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>\u2026 to know more about Update Pack 4<\/h3>\n<p>In the \u201cUpdate Pack Info\u201d window, make sure to read all the  information related to Update Pack 4. Some of it might be irrelevant to  you, but it will only take you a minute and it might you save you hours.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2026 to upgrade to Update Pack 4<\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re ready and you know all that there is to know, press the \u201cInstall Updates\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p>During the update you\u2019ll be asked a few things. One is quite  important.. the new kernel will ask you where to install Grub. Answer  with the location of your current Grub menu (which on most systems is \u201c<strong>\/dev\/sda<\/strong>\u201c).<\/p>\n<h2>FAQ<\/h2>\n<h3>Will upgrading to Update Pack 4 mean I will lose Gnome 2?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. But you will also gain access to MATE (which is almost the same as Gnome 2). To install MATE install the package &#8220;mate-desktop-environment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>Is Cinnamon included in Update Pack 4?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. To install it, simply install the package &#8220;cinnamon&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I keep Gnome 2 and ignore Update Pack 4?<\/h3>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s not a long-term solution.. yes, you can. Please read the following <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.linuxmint.com\/?p=1944\">blog post<\/a> for more info on Gnome 2, Update Pack 4 and alternative desktops.<\/p>\n<h3>Will LMDE get new ISO images with Update Pack 4?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, in the coming days\/weeks, LMDE will be released in two editions featuring Update Pack 4:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The traditional XFCE edition<\/li>\n<li>The main LMDE edition featuring MATE 1.2 as the default desktop and Cinnamon 1.4 as a secondary desktop.
