Although they were simple to use and to maintain they were not flexible enough and were causing limitations. One of these limitation was the unability to &#8220;pin&#8221; repositories. For instance to ensure the Mint version of Firefox would hide the Ubuntu one, we had to artificially increase the version number from 2.0.0.6 to 2.0.06. These kind of dirty tricks worked fine but it was time to address the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0problem\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0duplication\u00a0of\u00a0packages\u00a0between\u00a0releases.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0instance\u00a0Cassandra\u00a0and\u00a0Celena\u00a0shared\u00a0the\u00a0same\u00a0package\u00a0base so they were compatible with the same packages. Duplicating all our packages for those two releases took space on the server.<\/p>\n<p>Daryna\u00a0is\u00a0now\u00a0using\u00a0a\u00a0&#8220;pooled&#8221;\u00a0repository\u00a0organized\u00a0into\u00a03\u00a0components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>main (all packages developped by Linux Mint, ex: mintinstall)<\/li>\n<li>upstream\u00a0(all\u00a0packages\u00a0coming\u00a0from\u00a0Ubuntu\u00a0and\u00a0patched\u00a0by\u00a0Linux\u00a0Mint, ex: firefox)<\/li>\n<li>import\u00a0(all\u00a0packages\u00a0added\u00a0from\u00a03rd\u00a0party\u00a0sources, ex: envy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2 additional components are also present but won&#8217;t be activated by default:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>community (all packages coming from the community or developped for a community edition, ex: sunbird-mint)<\/li>\n<li>backport (only used once a newer release is out to accept new versions of packages)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As\u00a0a\u00a0consequence,\u00a0in\u00a0your\u00a0sources.list\u00a0you should\u00a0change :<\/p>\n<p>deb http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/repository daryna\/<\/p>\n<p>to<\/p>\n<p>deb\u00a0http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/repository\u00a0daryna\u00a0main\u00a0upstream\u00a0import<\/p>\n<p>#deb\u00a0http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/repository\u00a0daryna community backport<\/p>\n<p>#\u00a0deb-src\u00a0http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/repository\u00a0daryna\u00a0main\u00a0upstream\u00a0import<\/p>\n<p>#deb-src\u00a0http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/repository\u00a0daryna community backport<\/p>\n<p>Romeo\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0change,\u00a0starting\u00a0from\u00a0Daryna.\u00a0Its\u00a0components\u00a0will\u00a0represent\u00a0the\u00a0different\u00a0Mint\u00a0releases.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0instance,\u00a0to\u00a0get\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Romeo\u00a0packages\u00a0for\u00a0Daryna,\u00a0you&#8217;ll\u00a0use:<\/p>\n<p>deb\u00a0http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/repository\u00a0romeo\u00a0daryna<\/p>\n<p>#deb-src\u00a0http:\/\/www.linuxmint.com\/repository\u00a0romeo\u00a0daryna<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0old\u00a0Daryna\u00a0repository\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0present\u00a0but\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0removed\u00a0when\u00a0Daryna\u00a0becomes\u00a0stable.\u00a0\u00a0Romeo will be removed as well. Bianca, Cassandra and Celena will stay the way they are.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0this\u00a0new\u00a0repository\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0now\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0pin\u00a0Mint\u00a0against\u00a0Ubuntu\u00a0and\u00a0give\u00a0it\u00a0a\u00a0higher\u00a0priority.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0enables\u00a0us\u00a0to\u00a0maintain\u00a0our\u00a0own\u00a0packages\u00a0without\u00a0having\u00a0to\u00a0worry\u00a0of\u00a0future\u00a0Ubuntu\u00a0updates.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0Firefox\u00a0is getting close to version\u00a03.0\u00a0it was decided there was no real reason to downgrade back to 2.0.0.x. When 2.0.0.9 comes out we&#8217;ll release 2.0.09, when 3.0 comes out we&#8217;ll start fresh with the real version number.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0hope\u00a0this\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0too\u00a0confusing\u00a0\ud83d\ude42\u00a0Everything\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0transparent\u00a0to\u00a0you\u00a0if\u00a0you\u00a0perform\u00a0a\u00a0fresh\u00a0install\u00a0of\u00a0Daryna\u00a0and\u00a0for\u00a0people\u00a0who\u00a0upgrade\u00a0instructions\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0very\u00a0detailed\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0subject.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So far Linux Mint has been using trivial repositories.
