GNOME vs Trolls

Before we start with the news, I’d like to bring this to everyone’s attention:

We are standing on the shoulders of giants, and among them GNOME is probably the tallest. Ubuntu provides an amazing base for us to build upon. If tomorrow they were to disappear it would be a tragedy for our project. Would it be the end? No, we wouldn’t have to start from scratch. Mint without Ubuntu is LMDE. What would Mint be without GNOME though?

When people hear GNOME they often just think of the desktop environment, i.e. GNOME Shell, a project we don’t use.. a project we don’t use but without which Cinnamon wouldn’t have existed. And a project which came from GNOME2, which we used for years, and without which MATE wouldn’t have existed.

Beyond the desktop environment, GNOME is also a large project which provides us with utilities and applications we use every day: our calculator,  agenda, the disk, screenshot, logs utilities, the system monitor are just a few of them.

Without GNOME there would be no Xapp project either. Xed, Xplayer, Xreader, Pix, Xviewer are forked from GNOME apps. Blueberry is a frontend to gnome-bluetooth etc etc..

Last but not least, absolutely “everything” we do, everything we develop here at Linux Mint relies on GNOME libraries and toolkits. What would Mint be without GNOME, GTK and its many libraries? I really don’t know. If it existed at all, it would definitely be completely different.

Date format

The default date format was fixed in Cinnamon and MATE. It will now properly follow the locale set by LC_TIME, and this locale is configurable in the Language Settings.

XAppStatusIcon

Work on the XAppStatusIcon API is finished. Applets were added to Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce. LibAppIndicator was patched. We’ll have crisp icons in all environments in 19.3, HiDPI compatible, with support for symbolic icons and without rendering issues.

Linux Mint 19.3 ETA and codename

The upcoming version of Linux Mint will be codenamed “Tricia”. It will be released for Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce in 32-bit and 64-bit just before Christmas.

New logo

New splash screens were made for Grub:

and Plymouth:

Celluloid

Xplayer and VLC will be replaced by Celluloid 0.17.

The mpv based player will be properly integrated within the OS and provide much better performance.

Gnote

Tomboy will be replaced by Gnote 3.34. With the exception of the tray icon, Gnote provides the same functionality as Tomboy but it is built on modern technology.

With Tomboy gone we no longer need Mono in Linux Mint. Tomboy was also one of the very few remaining apps we shipped by default which didn’t support HiDPI.

Xfce

Xfce will be upgraded to 4.14, based on GTK3 and with initial support for HiDPI.

HWE stack

To boost compatibility with modern hardware, Linux Mint 19.3 will ship with kernel 5.0 and Xorg 1.20.

Before we get started with the news, I’d also like to thank the people who helped us troubleshoot the Update Manager tray icon bug last month. It was an important bug, which we couldn’t easily reproduce, and thanks to you we were finally able to fix it.

Date Format

Last month we announced the Language configuration tool would let people choose the locale for the date format. In their feedback some users indicated this wouldn’t be enough, and they were right.

We looked into this and identified a design flaw in the way the default date format is localized. Although the names of the days and months are localized according to the LC_TIME environment variable, we were fetching the format itself using gettext according to the desktop’s language.

We will get this fixed in Cinnamon and in MATE for 19.3.

XAppStatusIcon

A lot of work went into polishing the XAppStatusIcons which were introduced last month. A new API is available on the desktop side which makes it easy to develop applets.

Applets are currently available for Cinnamon and MATE and we’re working on a panel plugin for Xfce 4.14.

In Linux Mint 19.3, libAppIndicator will also be patched to use XAppStatus as fallback.

System Reports

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to read the blog to find out a new version of Linux Mint was available? How about these language packs you’re missing in your computer? And did you set your root password already?

The System Reports tool is finally becoming the useful tool it was supposed to be. Its purpose is to raise awareness and identify potential issues in your computer.

It was first introduced in Linux Mint 18.3 as an application you could run to browse through information and crash reports.

In Linux Mint 19.2 it became compatible with LMDE and it received a new pane to show and upload system information.

Going forward it will run in the background and let you know when issues require your attention.

This allows us to communicate with you and to help you in a way we couldn’t before. Unlike the documentation and the release notes which are generic and targeted at all users, this tool allows us to show information and solutions which are relevant to you specifically, and if we know how to fix them, to provide you with a button you can click to solve things easily.

So far the tool checks:

• If a new version of Linux Mint is available
• If your version of Linux Mint is getting close to EOL
• If your Timeshift configuration is set up (the Update Manager won’t care about this anymore)
• If there are drivers available
• If you are missing language packs
• If you are missing multimedia codecs

And it raises awareness on the question of root passwords.

Linux Mint Logo

Work continues on the Linux Mint logo. I’d like to thank Sebastien (SebastJava) for identifying and fixing issues and margin inconsistencies in our original logo. We’re going towards an LM shape which looks similar to the original, but without these issues, without the gap between the two letters and without the surrounding leaf.

Reducing the logo to just the L and M letters allows us to produce more modern designs and exploit a wider variety of colors and shapes.

Other News

We received the very first MintBox 3. It looks amazing and its speed is fantastic. We’re troubleshooting an issue around the CPU and working with Compulab to address it.

We’ll have a review and more information about the unit in the next few weeks.

The codename for LMDE 4 is Debbie. It’s cute and it suits the Debian base quite well. There is no ETA for it yet.

Xplayer is a mature project, it’s well translated and it integrates very well within our desktop environments. Its performance in terms of video playback, which relies on the GStreamer backend, is however quite poor compared to other backends such as MPV. It also uses ClutterGst to render subtitles and OSD and that limits it when it comes to hardware accelerated playback. We’re looking at MPV based alternatives at the moment (the MPV player itself, Celluloid which can be made retro-compatible with 18.04, and libmpv1 which we can write a frontend for) and considering replacing Xplayer and not adding VLC automatically when installing the multimedia codecs.

We’ve a lot of news this month. Before getting started and talking about what we’ve been working on, I’d like to thank all the people who helped us. More than 300 people donate to us every month and more so than the financial support this gives us, it’s also a sign of appreciation and happiness from our users and that really boosts our confidence. We also rely on a strong network of sponsors and partners and it’s a real pleasure to work in these conditions and with that level of support. I’d also like to take the opportunity to relay two old pieces of news from our partners.

In August, CompuLab completed the transition to Mint 17.2. New Mintbox 2 and Mintbox Mini units now ship with Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon edition.

And in February, HELLOTUX started shipping Linux Mint sweaters.

“Rosa”, the codename for Linux Mint 17.3 was recently announced, and many new features were implemented in preparation for its release.

On top of the improvements which were mentioned last month, Cinnamon 2.8 will introduce a visual workspace switcher applet and a better sound applet:

MATE 1.12 received a lot of attention and will feature the following changes:

• Better touchpad support (including natural scrolling, and middle-click emulation on three finger clicks)
• Better session management (including screensaver inhibition on media playback with VLC, Totem etc..)
• Better support for multiple monitors
• Better display settings (using output names and a more explicit UI and letting you set the primary monitor)
• Model/Vendor information in the power applet (so you can distinguish between multiple devices using batteries)

HiDPI support was improved for HTML themes in MDM. To take an example, on a 13″ Macbook Pro with a native resolution of 2560×1600, MDM used to blindly apply a 2x scale ratio and the login screen looked slightly too big (1280×800). It now works towards an “ideal” DPI value instead. In this case it applies a 1.3 scale ratio and the login screen ends up looking much nicer in what looks like 1969×1230.

The detection of HDMI TVs was also much improved. HiDPI would kick in by mistake on TVs which didn’t report their screen size correctly. That was fixed and some of these fixes will also be ported towards Cinnamon.

MATE and Xfce users will receive great window management improvements:

• Better support for Compiz
• Support for Compton and OpenBox
• The ability to switch between various window managers

Although the Xfce edition will still use Xfwm4, it is likely to ship with Compton installed by default. On some computers, this compositing manager is known to reduce screen-tearing, and switching to it will be a breeze.

Last but not least, we worked on servers and mirrors. On the server side, extra.linuxmint.com was clustered and is now served by 2 separate servers. Repositories were also tuned to let apt-get know when files were last-modified. Although this is quite a small detail, it means two consecutive calls to apt-get update no longer re-download the same information (that information is tiny in size but it all adds up). We’re hoping this will improve response times and download speed on the main repository.

Linux Mint also benefits from a network of 68 repository mirrors and we’d like the OS to take advantage of that. Changes in the installer and in the Update Manager were planned and cool new improvements were added to the Software Sources tool:

• Mirrors closer to you are now tested first (mirrors in your country first, then mirrors in neighbour countries, then mirrors in your part of the World and eventually mirrors in your continent)
• Mirrors are tested one by one and their speed is much more meaningful than before
• Mirrors are tested to check if they’re up-to-date and can be filtered out from the list

This was just implemented in the last few days. We’ll post more details about this soon on Segfault and we’ll probably make a package available for people to test these features before they land in Linux Mint 17.3.
