  • This is the busiest period of the year, and with no advertising income generated this month we’re relying solely on your donations and sponsorships. With that in mind, I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to the 186 donors and the 130 sponsors who supported us financially. We’ve been lucky and successful since the start of this project, and this is probably the most difficult time since then, but you’ve been here for us, a fantastic community and a great network of partners, which meant we could carry on and afford to continue even without our main sources of income.
  • Although we’re in a difficult situation financially, the future looks extremely bright. Our last recorded growth was a staggering 40%. With millions of Internet users Linux Mint is the 4th most popular operating system in the world, and we’re growing much faster than our competitors. Our business model consists in applying all our focus on the product itself, on distributing it for free and on monetizing the traffic and activity you generate on the Web. It’s the same business model used by TV channels and Radio stations, the wider the audience, the more successful it is. We’re currently in the process of choosing our business partners for the search market. Which browser and search engine will be the default in Linux Mint, how much funding will they generate for us and our partners? What default experience will you get out of it? This is all being decided at the moment. The solution we previously had in place needed to evolve, both from a user and business point of view. Going forward we’ll hopefully provide you with a better experience while generating additional funding in the process.
  • Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” will be released in November this year with continued support for Gnome 2 but also with the introduction of Gnome 3. The radical changes introduced by the Gnome project split the community. At the time of releasing Linux Mint 11 we decided it was too early to adopt Gnome 3. This time around, the decision isn’t as simple. Gnome 3.2 is more mature and we can see the potential of this new desktop and use it to implement something that can look and behave better than anything based on Gnome 2. Of course, we’re starting from scratch and this process will take time and span across multiple releases. Until then, it’s important we continue to support the traditional Gnome 2 desktop. We’re likely to release two separate editions, one for Gnome 2.32 and one for Gnome 3.2. We’re also working in cooperation with the MATE project (which is a fork of Gnome 2) at the moment to see if we can make both desktops compatible in an effort to let you run both Gnome 2 (or MATE) and Gnome 3 on the same system, either in Linux Mint 12, or for the future.

    Summary:

    • Linux Mint Gnome and Linux Mint Xfce (both based on Debian testing) are currently being tested.
    • The Update Packs and the new Update Manager were a success and allowed us to warn the community about upstream breakages (Gnome 3 regressions, MESA incompatibilities..etc) and to adapt our technology before updates were made available to the public. The next step is already in progress and it consists in developing a network of mirrors for the new Debian repositories.
    • A quick interview was given to “My Linux Rig“
    • The decision was taken to migrate our KDE and Fluxbox editions to LMDE. Going forward our project will support 2 desktops with a frozen Ubuntu base (Gnome and LXDE) and 4 desktops on top of a rolling Debian base (Gnome, KDE, Xfce and Fluxbox).
    • Our daily income went down 9% in July due to a smaller number of donations and the average price paid per clicks/impressions in advertising. July and August are traditionally quiet so these results are not alarming. In fact the slight increases observed in the number of impressions and search queries are extremely positive for us, especially in the middle of the summer holidays.

    Summary:

    • All the new features and improvements released in Linux Mint 11 were made available to LMDE. Firefox 5 was also released for LMDE and Thunderbird 5 will follow. We’re currently working on a new update mechanism and a fork of mintupdate dedicated to Debian. A new 100Gbps server was recently acquired to host what will become the new LMDE repositories. Improvements are also planned on the installer and the ISOs will get a respin in July.
    • To face the growth of the project and the increase in our user base, we migrated both the website and the repositories at the beginning of June. The website was moved on our eUKhost server in the UK and the repositories were migrated to a new 100Mbps server with unmetered bandwidth. Both services have been running really well since and with much better performance than before.
    • The LXDE edition passed QA and an RC was released.
    • We’re currently testing the KDE edition of Linux Mint 11.
    • Thanks to all the people who purchased a Linux Mint T-shirt. I hope they enjoy it as much as I do (I got two polo shirts myself and as you can imagine, I really enjoy wearing them). Whether it’s the promotion or the sales, it’s nice to see it happen and this helps Linux Mint. Our partner HELLOTUX sold more than 100 black Linux Mint t-shirts. This was an excellent result and these sales brought $545 to our project.     • In partnership with OxyPress, Linux Mint is  publishing a printed magazine in the USA called “Linux Mint 11 Identity Kit”. The magazine is available in newsagents throughout the country.     • There is a significant raise in our user base which is estimated at just below 10% this month.
    • From a financial point of view, we’re up 19% this month. This was the second biggest increase in the history of the project!
