Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna reaches end-of-life

Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna will reach end of life on April 18, 2009. This release was based on Ubuntu 7.10 which is planned to reach end-of-life at the same date.

Repositories will remain open for another while but no more updates or security fixes will be made available. Users of Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna are asked to migrate to Linux Mint 5 LTS Elyssa (Long Term Release which will be supported until April 2011) or Linux Mint 6 Felicia (which will be supported until April 2010).

Announcement from Ubuntu: “As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing security and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 7.10 will reach end of life on Saturday, April 18, 2009. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 7.10.

Note: Linux Mint follows the Ubuntu release cycle with a new release every 6 months, a lifespan of about 1.5 years per release and 3 years per LTS release. LTS stands for Long Term Support. Linux Mint 5 is an LTS release.

  1. As with Ubuntu 7.10, Daryna was my first Linux Mint edition, and I loved it. Sad to see it go, but everything passes, and Felicia is even better. 😀

  2. I am still using Daryna and I am really content with it.
I guess I have to move on with a newer distribution next month for security fixes.

  3. Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna KDE was my first Linux Mint edition as well. It was simply excellent and very very stable. The look, the snappy feel, the way things truly worked “out of the box”, the awesome DEV Team and the great Linux Mint community were all things that sold me on this great Distro. I feel very privileged and proud to be a member of this community. I will always keep my Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna KDE Live DVD as a cherished memory, a point in time for me when true freedom really became elegance. I salute our Developers, our Distro and our community….

  4. I am still using Daryna Linux Mint 4,0 as it is perfect in every way, and the only Ubuntu or Mint release which can find my sound card. It’s a shame that a programmer out there doesn’t take it over, and build on it to incorporate new technologies.

  5. Too bad :-(. I’m still using Mint 4 on my desktop. Runs just great, but I guess it’s time to get with the program and upgrade. I hope my ATI card will run well with Mint6.

  6. Mr. Noche

when you install lm6, the migration assistant should automatically detect and advise you about migratable OS found on the hdd

  7. It took me bloody ages to get the wireless on my laptop sorted… Will somebody help this unbearably n00bish luddite get it to work on Elyssa?

  8. Sad, as it has been the ONLY surviving distribution in which ACIDrip’s x264 coding has worked ! (It used to work in Ubuntu 7.10 until modified by Ubuntu 8.04 development.)

  9. this is the only ubuntu I could actually tolerate. it runs on my latitude c610 (512 Mib Ram) w/o issue.

  10. I’ve migrated to Felicia since 2 months ago. My feeling is mixed with Felicia, because some part of Daryna is more stable than Felicia, and some part Felicia is more stable than Daryna.

  11. Daryna was my first Mint edition as well. I did enjoy it and used it up until about a month ago. I replaced it with Felicia x64 on my laptop and it has been running even better so far.

  12. Mint 4.0 is the only Mint release where everything worked. I have it on one computer and have no intention of letting it go. I dual boot LM 4.0 and LM 6.0 on one computer and Debian Lenny and LM 6.0 on the second computer. No way am I getting rid of Daryna.

  13. I just upgraded from Daryna last night. Very stable, I was quite happy with it. But I was installing Felicia on my sisters laptop, and got drawn in by the new shiny stuff.

On a side note: I convinced my sister to give linux mint a try. She was a windows user and had vista on her laptop. I had her run the liveCD for a few hours before installing. After about 1 hour she came back to me and said (and I quote) “I want this”. The liveCD worked 100% on her Toshiba, wireless, mp3, flash, xorg. Having that liveCD work so well won over another windows user to linux, mint linux.

    Good work linux mint team!

  14. I am using the Daryna KDE CE version of Linux Mint. It is on an older machine and I want to do a version upgrade to Elyssa … how do you suggest I do it? Should I download and use a disk or can I upgrade in place like Kubuntu? Please someone send a link or advise. Thank you.
