  1. Great! Thanks!

I found just one bug so far: on my laptop, the icon of Power Manager isn’t visible in the system tray by default. Not even when on battery power. This can be fixed by a simple settings change: Menu – Settings – Power Manager: tick: show system tray icon.

  2. Another remark on this beautiful and elegant bèta: by default, the Whisker menu shows generic application names (e.g. “Web Browser”) instead of the real application names (e.g. “Firefox Web Browser”).

That’s confusing when you’ve installed, for example, a second web browser like Chrome or Chromium.

A simple settings change can fix this: right-click on the menu icon – Properties – remove the tick for: Show generic application names

  3. Awesome! I’m really looking forward to the final release, but I’ll make sure to try the beta as much as possible 🙂

    Thanks for your work

  4. I am not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but when switching XFWM to Mint-Y themes, the Dark & Darker themes have a 1px window border, but the normal one doesn’t (like all the Mint-Y themes in Cinnamon)
I also don’t especially like the blue hue on window bars (Dark(er)), is there any file I can edit to modify the themes?

Edit by Clem: Hi, it’s a bug alright. Mint-Y got a lot of changes in Cinnamon and MATE but we’re just getting started with Xfce. These are quite trivial and they didn’t block the BETA, we’ll have them fixed this week.

  5. Tested live system on a 10yo single-core Toshiba Satellite A105s7064 laptop — superb all over. Also tested live system on 12yo HP Pavilion a600n desktop (Athlon 2800+ XP with Nvidia Geforce 6200LE-APG card) — superb all over. Those -X and -Y themes are classy! Will now install on harddisk and thoroughly test at the app level. Any reason why VLC is not included? THANKS FOR ALL YOUR WORK!

  6. Bravo! No issues with Korean ^__^
Happy to announce that we don’t have any issues with Korean 🙂

  7. I have found a bug regarding the Mint-Y theme. For some reason upon clicking on the Mint-Y theme, the text on the Home folder on the Desktop becomes out of alignment where it shifts to the left. Logging out or restarting VMWare doesn’t fix the issue.

  8. Just a question: is thunar patched to stop the crashing that plagued it in Xubuntu 16.04?

Edit by Clem: No, can you post a link to the bug report/patch, and explain steps on how to reproduce the issue?

  9. I’ve installed it a few days ago and i love it 🙂

    I noticed a Theme-combination-bug…
    Windowborders: Mint-Y
    +Theme: Mint-Y-Darker
    +Icons: Mint-Y
The Icons on Panel and in Filemanager-toolbar are black.
They must be light i think.

And please, make windows borders in Mint-Y little bit widther.
Its so difficult to resize with the mouse only.

Thanks for you work! J.Ar 8)

    Edit by Clem: Will do.

  10. Editing Connections – Network Connections – IPv4 Settings – Manual – Add Addresses – click in the field for IP address – brings in single messed up field for Address – Netmask – Gateway on Asus V1Sn with NVidia 950M. Several trials to add address, mask and gateway solved the problem.

    Thanks for the great work!

  11. @Pjotr – no’s 2 & 3.

Thanks so much for those two tips. Was wondering what happened to battery icon?

  12. Mint Xfce is looking great. Only thing I’ve noticed is the battery monitor is missing from the tray in 32 bit version. Otherwise awesome.

Edit by Clem: It’s a limitation in Xfce, if we enabled the battery icon, it shows up for everybody, even people without a battery. To enable it, go in the power manager settings and enable the systray icon.

  13. When trying to select a login screen in the preferences just the background is shown if i start the preview. I would have expected to see the login dialog as well.

    Regards,
    Stefan

  14. Two more things regarding my previous comment. I can change the focus from Mint-X login screen to e.g. Zukitwo but do not hit the radio button. If I afterwards want to see the preview still Mint-X is shown. This is unnecessarily confusing … in my point of view.

If I hit the radio button for Zukitwo the preview just shows a gray background that doesn’t match the small preview in the selection window. This is the same behaviour as in linux mint 17.3

  15. OK, first real issue. When I changed the clock/calendar format they disappear from the panel. Can anyone else confirm this bug? And can you tell me how to get my clock to show up again on the panel?

  16. waiting for KDE version ^^

Edit by Clem: Give us some time for the KDE edition. We’re looking at Plasma 5 as a completely new desktop.

  17. If I start a preview of a selected login screen in the preferences and close it by hitting the X on the upper right border the associated process /usr/lib/mdm/mdmwebkit stays in memory and isn’t freed.
If I repeat and take a look for more previews the amount of occupied memory accumulates.

    Regards,
    Stefan

  18. GREAT!!
I want to test the beta tomorrow.
Does anybody know a backport of kwin4 to Mint 18?
I like WM with tabs. Other recommends are welcome!

  19. Re: #14, I was about to report the same issue with the panel time display disappearing. If I right-click and select ‘Properties’ and change anything (for me it’s time zone and display format) the clock readout disappears. The plugin is actually still there because when I hover over it there’s a small vertical line I can click on and the calendar shows up.

    I’m running the 64-bit Live-USB version.

  20. 1) Thunar crashes when rename files.
    bugzilla. xfce. org/show_bug.cgi?id=12264
Contains some patches from various devs, I think they should be tested and applied.

    2) Whisker menu buttons are highlighted
    bugzilla. xfce. org/show_bug.cgi?id=12402
Rebuild master or apply this commit please
    git. xfce. org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/commit/?id=4f732a1b63595aa6745409bd403e0ca098e20dcd

    3) Banshee player is unusable (Can’t resize panel elements, window starts to drag). Maybe replace with Clementine or any gtk player.

    4) Qt apps Look and feel has become broken again (clementine e. g.). The way to fix it – add env variable DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome .

    5) Bluetooth icon has become colored. Monochrome was looking much better and fit to design (network, sound and bluetooth as system icons were all mono)! 🙂

    End of part 1 🙂

  21. Part 2:

    6) Archieve maanger is from gnome. Maybe replace with xar (X-apps) or engrampa?

    7) Xfce4-task-manager toolbar style “Small” looks much better (maybe change default conf)

    8) Update manager minimum height is too big (650 px)

    9) Update Libreoffice to 5.1.4

The first part was written under impressions of using Xubuntu 16.04 for 1 month, so something may have been fixed in LM18. This part is about LM18 impressions

  22. @kbd47 no. 14
I had the same issue on 64 bit with the disappearing clock. Looking in the .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/ folder is a file named xfce4-panel.xml. About half way through the file is a section named . The clock plugin is “plugin-5”. It should show value of “%I:%M %p” or somewhat similar. When you set the format through the clock icon properties, the changes show in the panel as you change them, but as soon as you click okay, the clock disappears. The value of the plugin then changes to ” “, showing it is empty. Something is erasing the format value. Any suggestions or is this a bug?
Otherwise, the XFCE version looks nice and clean.

  23. Works well on Asus Am1m-a AMD mobo but refuses to boot on Intel d2700 MUD that is currently running with 17.2 even in “compatibility mode”. Just stops and never loads a desktop. Never saw this with the 17.x series.

  24. Tumbler is causing drives (all kinds) with video files on them to lock and then you cannot un-mount or eject, etc. This is an old bug returned in this version.

    Thunar trows the error:

One or more applications are keeping the volume busy
    Tumblerd
    /usr/lib/…path to tumblerd

  25. I second fixxxer’s question: when are we getting KDE/Plasma?

I’m currently running Linux Mint 18 MATE Edition on an SD card with KDE/Plasma Neon 5.7 installed as my default desktop.

I’m thinking about moving the files to my main hard drive and overwriting Linux Mint 17.3 KDE.

I respect GNOME and all of its derivatives (MATE, Cinnamon, GNOME3). However, I prefer KDE/Plasma. A lot of us do. Hopefully you guys release a KDE/Plasma version soon.

  26. Ty lm team.

    1) Thunar crashes sometimes when rename files
    2) Thunar crahses sometimes when copy and paste files
    3) When i use keyboard layout “shift+alt” all time light up indicator on my keyboard
    4) I downloaded iso 1.5gb . My firefox used 20%CP + with download. Its normal? Will update pls firefox 47.1

ty so much gl hf sorry my english so bad 🙂

  27. Please people, have some patience with the KDE version. It will be a completely new desktop and I’m pretty sure it requires more work than XFCE/Cinnamon/Mate. Also current KDE version of Mint hasn’t become obsolete and unusable overnight has it?

  28. Many thanks. The auto-restart after installation put me into 640×480, better offered. Did some updates and some desktop configuration. Hard reset came up at 1280×768 with usual options.

  29. I tested: http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/testing/linuxmint-18-xfce-64bit-beta.iso and I noticed two issues:

    1. When you launch Nautilus, it overwrites the xfdesktop, this should not happen. It was not happening with 17.3 and its not happening with Xubuntu 16.04. So Nautilus draws its own desktop on top.

    2. You need to add a bit of padding / space to the sidebar icons in Nautilus as they are too close to the edge and it looks a bit out of place. I haven’t tested the File Selectors but I assume the same thing would happen. I have fixed this personally by modifying the theme file.

  30. >Edit by Clem: Give us some time for the KDE edition. We’re looking at Plasma 5 as a completely new desktop.

Yes, I know this is XFCE but hear me out here…

    Hi Clem,
I personally get that Plasma 5 is completely new and will take time to get right and so I am not goingot be hassle your team to delier with speed.

But, just one thing that wouldmake MInt THE place to come to for KDE Plasma 5…
    orders around the Applications.

Don’t know why this decision was made by KDE but in 5 there are no bordr around apps allowing them, nay, MAKING them merge into one another. I live day to day by the functionality of KDE and it will be hard for me to switch to noahter desktop (though I intend to look more closely at Cinnamon but not with my workload as it is!)
None of the Plasma 5 distros I have glanced at – no time for much experimentation – has borders around apps now. I wonder if this is ‘fixable’ by Mint? I guess not as it is upstream but *if* it is possible it would make Mint a KDE goldmine. It might even be just a theme but I have found nothing so far that resolves the problem.

Mentioning it early as nobody thinks border less apps is a forward step in KDE.

Very grateful for your hard work. Wife’s credit card in standby for KDE!

  31. For those waiting on KDE, if I can speak for the Mint team as a pure user here – Plasma 5 is a massive change to KDE. It’s going to take some time.

Clem and co. have to treat Plasma 5 as a totally new desktop. The old QT4 libraries are gone and Clem and co. have to work on not just a new desktop but new code and libraries.

That is also no upgrade from Mint 17.x to 18 as KDE 5 is basically a replacement for KDE 4 and not upgradable. Not for Mint anyway. But Mint 18.0 will be able to be upgraded to 18.1 and 182, and 19 etc. It is just that Plasma 5 is a change waaaayyyyy beyond anything in Cinnamon, Mate or XFCE. It’s like the change from GNOME 2 to 3 – though less painful in term s of UI experience – here everything has changed. With GNOME 3 Clem and co had to fork GNOME! That isn’t happening here but this is all new code.

The Mint team has no chance of releasing KDE at anything like the same time as XFCE. Given the number of disasters I have seen with Plasma 5 distros – more the distros than KDE itself, mind, I would rather Mint takes its time and get it right. I will be testing the Beta as soon as it comes out but I know it will a while.

We have to be patient. Our time will come.

  32. Is there the slightest chance that there’s an option to choose between UTC and Local Time in this new build ? Plays havoc with dual-booting Windows, as Mint (and Ubuntu distros, it seems from threads I’ve read) change the time in the BIOS once UTC’s implemented. Installed MATE 18, and now my local time is a few hrs. earlier – aware of a fix in Win 7 registry, but if an option could be put in to choose Local Time, I imagine this would solve the issue. Think Debian and Manjaro allow for these options from test-installs I’ve done in the last month or so. Please implement if not too much work involved in doing so … otherwise, like Linux Mint so far.

  33. In addition to Jedinovice’s comment, i would test the beta asap. My personal KDE5/Plasma tests till now are limited to OpenSUSE and Kubuntu. I want to clarify I LOVE PLASMA and I AM USING KDE4 right now (Mint 17.3). It is usable but there are tiny things that piss me off and Plasma is not ready yet. I really hope you do your magic and make another great distro as 17.3 KDE.
I really hope that you will fix (asuming you fork Kubuntu) Driver manager and will be REALLY HAPPY if all themes and icon packs shown in theme manager are USABLE for KDE 5 and are not “this is not a valid theme file”. I think if its not working for plasma it should not be in the Theme/Icon menu. But this is just my opinion.
Also i am missing the Root actions option in dolphin. Hope you leave them there. Have fun guys(as much as you can have fun with C) and fingers crossed.

  34. Mint 18 Xfce gives an opportunity to work somehow in a similar to Plasma 5 way for awhile. So no reason to constantly ask when will 18 KDE be released. Actually first time I tried Plasma 5 was a tremendous shock for me and disaster. After several months, in this spring, I decided to try it once more. But Plasma of Kubuntu was not usable, Plasma of Debian Unstable was not usable either. I couldn’t tell the bug and the feature, a total mess.
So I had to install non-Debian distro and after two or three months of hacking, reconstructing and re-tuning all my old desktops structure to a new ideology, I can confess that I really can use Plasma 5 now 🙂
And will be using it again because, as fixxxer (#34) said – KDE4 is “usable but there are tiny things that piss me off and Plasma is not ready yet”. So we’ve got no choice…
I had to transform my beloved two dimensional (4 Desktops/3 Activities) environment of KDE4 into actually one dimensional (6 Activities only) environment of Plasma 5 (new desktops do not count). Made one activity of 6 as a some kind of the former Dashboard, moved my beloved themes, icons, fonts to Plasma 5 and so on…
I think 5.6.5 is a minimal version of Plasma that can be usable in a certain way and certain hack. And it’s not worth even trying to implement a version less than Plasma 5.7 on any OS. And maybe even wait till the next year, depending on Debian. No hurry please.
If to get used to Plasma 5 preliminary and to avoid asking stupid questions here after the future release of Mint 18 KDE, then another, not Debian, distro can help the user to do it. For example, a quite usable but still buggy Plasma 5.6.5 of Fedora KDE has been good for me. With Mint 17.3 KDE and Mint 18 Xfce as a base OS-s, of course 🙂

  35. After minting a fresh LM18xfce-beta parition on my laptop (single-core, Toshiba Satellite A105s7064, 32bit, 2GB ram), the system uses 20-30% CPU at idle state (only the DE runs, no apps running, wifi active). No swap is being used (per gparted), 200MB ram used (per task manager). Afaict (per task manager), the culprit is the panel’s “libindicator-plugin.so” (only the network and sound indicators are shown/active) and/or its “wrapper-2.0” thingy that shows up in its command line. If i delete that plugin from the panel, idle-CPU drops down to 2-5% max. When i add the plugin to the panel again, idle-CPU jumps back up to 20-30%. For older systems this is bad news. A racing condition, perhaps?

  36. WalterE, regarding the clock, I installed xfce4-goodies which gives the option to add a second, different clock/calendar to the panel under the panel settings. It does fix the bug, but it gives you another working clock and calendar to use.

  37. can not comment under cinnamon, sorry.

    mint 18 cinnamon 64bit mint-y:

i noticed an issue when copying files from/over to usb with nemo. the files that are created all have a filesize of 0kb. this happened several times.

so i now use freefilesync for copying files just to be on the safe side.

also, nemo does not save its layout, instead the places to the left are nearly covered entirely on every start.

  38. There is a persistent bug also found in LM-Xfce 17.3. If you select Compiz as window manager you only get the default (Adwaita) ugly window border, not the active theme gtk border as it should be (for example if the default Mint-X is used as main theme you should also get the window border associated with this theme). You always end up with the Adwaita border regardless of what theme that is selected. This makes windows look weird if Compiz is used as window manager.

    / Tomas Nilzon

  39. Nautilus overwrites the desktop with its own settings, removing icons and background and the right click context menu. Tried Nemo instead, that’s working fine.

  40. VEGalin, I disagree with your statement (not your experience, btw).

I’m running Plasma 5.7.2 on Linux Mint 18 (MATE Edition) right now from the neon user repository (deb http://archive.neon.kde.org/user xenial main). It is rock solid stable.

I have used it for the past week. I had to build the desktop from scratch (install a bunch of package/trial and error), but it works great and it looks excellent!

Here are some of the (minor) issues that I am having:

-The mintUpdate systray icon is way to small. My workaround: launch mintUpdate from the app.

-The KDE lockscreen is not working. My workaround: disable KDE lockscreen and use xscreensaver.

-Some system-wide settings are missing from systemsettings5. My workaround: run the individual settings from the main menu separately.

-Be careful what you install from the main Linux Mint 18 repositories. Some of the old KDE4 system files in the main repos will cause problems with the new KDE5/Plasma desktop.

That’s it! Everything else works fine. I have this installed on an external SD card, but I am going to install it over my Linux Mint 17.3 KDE system. It is that stable and I really love using it. Can’t wait for the “official” Linux Mint 18 KDE.

Please let me know if you want to see a screenshot..

  41. Thanks for your comment #52, Kelvin. I have not thought of installing Plasma 5 onto 18 MATE but with the link you gave and all these hints I already want to try it. No need in the screenshot, thanks. Maybe I won’t install it right now who knows, though I’d like to test 5.7.2 on Mint. Your successful experience itself is of the most importance for me. It gives the users an additional hope that it will be ok with kde on Mint and that Plasma 5.7.2 is ‘already’ good enough. It’s really wonderful.

  42. VEGalin, no problem! Here are the instruction I followed:

Make sure to disable any Kubuntu repositories in Synaptic. Then close Synaptic.

In a terminal add the repository.. sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://archive.neon.kde.org/user xenial main”

    The do..

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install neon-desktop neon-all
    sudo apt full-upgrade

    Good luck!

  43. Tried the XFCE 18 beta last night to see if it fixed a persistent problem I was having with the display port not waking up. It did not fix the problem for me. I am using a NUC6i5syk, skylake.
Note that when I tested Cinnamon 18 it DID fix the problem, but I still prefer XFCE so I need to wait for this to work before upgrading.

  44. Sarah 32-Bit XFCE BETA USB Live Session: To get a duplex BTRFS system I pre-formatted my /dev/sda using mkfs.btrfs -d dup -m dup /dev/sda then followed the Something Else route to install to /dev/sda. GRUB failed to install, which I skipped over and the installation finished normally.
Using the USB to start the /dev/sda partition I had no problem running grub-install /dev/sda and update-grub…not a GRUB problem then, but the installer, maybe?

  45. Another problem. I’m from Israel, and I know there’s a local Ubuntu mirror, but it doesn’t appear when I’m searching for local mirrors. The fact that it’s looking for mirrors in Europe and not the far east is an improvement, but my local mirror should appear…

    Thanks for the great work.

  46. I found some bugs and Surge Auditions:
    1) synaptic has no quickSearch on the firstboot and live-session
    2) in live-session: when i make a folder on desktop it doesnt appear. in thunar it is.
    3) ristretto instead of Xviewer, it has more features and fits better in xfce
    4) hide scrollbars on none-hoover in synaptic but are always there thunar
    5) qt4 apps look wrong (tested with backintime-qt4), you can change it by installing qtconfig-qt4

  47. Sarah XFCE 32-bit BETA: I added nemo, but not the nemo-terminal extension…
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    nemo-terminal : Depends: gir1.2-vte-2.90 (>= 1:0.34.6~) but it is not installable.

Edit by Clem: oops, sorry about this. We’ll have this fixed asap.

  48. I’ve been using Mint since around version 11, and XFCE is the edition I prefer. Just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work! Looking for ward to the stable release (:

  49. Just a note that the Network Manager update to 1.2.0 cures a frustrating bug that has prevented wifi adapter recognition after boot for both an internal Atheros and external USB Realtek adapters – it’s an Ubuntu issue, that hasn’t happened before in my 10.04 through 16.04 experience. This is true of the final M18 releases of Cinnamon and MATE as well as this beta.

Since many users will expect to easily connect wifi before doing a first system update, this could waste a lot of time and create a bad first impression of the OS – I’d suggest the latest Network Manager be part of the final release.

Edit by Clem: Mint 18 already ships with NM 1.2.0.

  50. Congratulations and thank you for nice job!!!

As to the KDE version, please, don’t urge! Don’t use the retarding and unusable Plasma version 5.5.5 from Kubuntu 16.04 release!

For now the Plasma 5.7.1 is already available for Xenial in ‘ppa:kubuntu-ppa/staging-plasma’ launchpad repo (deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/staging-plasma/ubuntu xenial main), though without locale (kde-l10n-*) yet. It means that very soon it will be available in ‘ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports’ with locale.

The Plasma 5.7 has the CRUCIAL feature of KDE, the Agenda View in Calendar, which makes possible to see PIM events from KOrganizer (birthdays, meetings etc.) and public holidays in it. Actually, public holidays are already available in Plasma 5.7 release, but PIM events will be available after Applications 16.08 release in August (now they work in 16.07.70 developers branch). I think it is a good idea to wait for these versions to include them in Mint 18 KDE release.

  51. Kelvin, I don’t think that running’apt install neon-desktop neon-all’ is a good idea when upgrading Mint from Neon repo. And before running ‘apt full-upgrade’ I would prefer to pin down the ‘base-files’ package from Neon repo (by creating file in /etc/apt/preferences.d) to prevent repacing the original Mint ‘/etc/lsb-release’ and ‘/etc/os-release’ files.

  52. Hi I would appreciate if someone tells me the commands to upgrade from terminal to this new beta release(18 xfce beta 32 bit) I am using 18 Mate 32 bit. I don`t want fresh install from iso so I would like to know the upgrade apt commands. thanks in advance for all your support.

  53. 10) Fonts problem (freetype). Fonts have become smaller then they should be. Compare Dejavu Mono on ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 http://imgur.com/a/7TR9b

    11) xfce4-xkb-panelplugin has enormous font

    12) xfce4 terminal is transparent, but gnome-terminal on Mate and Cinnamon is not

  54. Installed on my old 32bit Acer Aspire 1414 Wlmi laptop and have the following issues:
    – On shut down or restart, it just hangs on the Mint splash logo. The laptop never switches off or restarts.
    – No wifi, my IPN2220 wifi card still isn’t picked up. This has always been problematic.

Will do some testing and see if I can get the wifi working using ndiswrapper and the old Windows drivers. But the theme is really beautiful!

  55. Just installed Linux Mint 18 Xfce beta 32-bit and it looks better then ever. Really great work.

Xplayer works well in full screen (on MATE edition it’s a bit slow on my old laptop). And till now everything else works very well. The Mint-Y-Dark theme with the white window’s border is great.

Xfce is my favorite edition and I want to say BIG thanks to Clem and the Linux Mint team!

  56. Can’t boot it from my USB key, first time this happens with a Linux Mint distribution. I downloaded from the torrent file so I don’t think my image is corrupted. I tried using Mint tool to create USB bootable key (Mint 17.3 XFCE), I also tried from Windows using Rufus and UNetbootin (latest versions), none boot (getting “failed to load ldlinux.c32” from Rufus installation, others will just freeze).
I will download again and check the integrity of my USB key and report…

  57. 1) I like nemo, but after running it i get duplicate desktop icons, even after closing it. I have to run pkil nemo to clear these.

    2) When I had mint 17 and xfce there was an extra button int the window taskbar that collapsed the window to a single bar this is no longer there

  58. I have Thinkpad T520 laptop, and unfortunately, updating to Linux Mint 18 MATE was one of the most painful updates so far. Mint 17.2 MATE, and some previous versions, worked fine.

After a fresh install, it refused to boot with lots of nouveau errors; it turned out that external VGA monitor makes it so unhappy. So I pulled out the monitor, booted, and tried to install NVidia driver. In the end of the process, it said something like “apparently there is a bug in the driver-updating script”, and refused to install NVidia driver. After I rebooted again and tried again, it worked.

There are some issues in how MATE handles tray icons: I use “indicator-multiload” package, and it worked fine on 17.2, but on 18, the icons are just too small. There was exactly the same issue on Mint 13, later it was fixed, and now, it’s back again.

Sometimes when I shutdown the laptop, I see lots of errors from NVidia as well. Sometimes it stucks at the boot time without any useful error messages.

So I assumed that 18 isn’t actually stable yet, so I just inserted old SSD with 17.2, and will try to stick to it. Luckily I didn’t install to the same SSD, but picked a new one instead.

  59. Mint Xfce is looking great, thanks a lot.

But, Please change everywhere in the german language pack this ugly
“Schreibtisch” back to “desktop” for each name, path, var and template.

Desktop is common like Download, it makes no sense to change it 1:1 to german words that are not common usage in IT.

Please, if you are on a phone giving support, asking.. do you see your schreibtisch==desk, what would be the answer… of course, a chair is in front of it?!

Why “Persönliche Ordner” -> “Eigene Dateien” is more common?!

May I help you and reread the translation of the “language pack” with some attention on usage and context. Please contact me.

    Regards.

Edit by Clem: Hi Dali. Translations happen in Launchpad, and for many projects (Xfce included) it’s upstream from us (on git.xfce.org for instance). I don’t speak German, but if the situation is the same as in French, you’re probably fighting a losing a battle. Many translators like to enforce neologisms in order to avoid borrowing from other languages.

  60. Cinnamon 64-bit:

The system is excellent. Congratulations to all concerned.

In my testing I have found that it works for all my purposes thus far.

I have three bugs to report, both with workarounds:

    Bug One
    ——-
I could not get my USB External HDD to work. This is a show-stopper for me because I use external HDDs for backups.

    dmesg showed the following error:
[ 5843.602869] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: ERROR Transfer event for disabled endpoint or incorrect stream ring

I was able to get my external drive working again by telling the system to ignore the ‘uas’ module for the device, causing it to fall back to ‘usb-storage’ instead.

Here is how to do it:

    1. Create a file named ignore_uas.conf in the /etc/modprobe.d directory:

    # sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/ignore-uas.conf

    Key in the following

    options usb-storage quirks=Vendor_ID:Product_ID:u

*(substitute your actual Vendor_ID and Product_ID obtained from the lsusb -v command or from dmesg. e.g.

    options usb-storage quirks=357d:7788:u
    ).

    Save & quit gedit

    Next, regenerate your inital ramdisk:

    # sudo update-initramfs -u

Et viola! The USB HDD will now be seen and mounted.

Solution courtesy of ‘Da_Coynul’ at: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1428782#p1428782

    Bug Two
    ——-
On choosing Shutdown / Restart, the machine gets to the shutdown state but does not then cycle to a reboot.

    Bug Three
    ———
On choosing Log Out then logging back in again, the Cinnamon desktop always goes in to fallback mode. I’m using the recommended NVIDIA video drivers.

  61. Mint 18 is working well for me. Congratulations to all involved.

I have three bugs to report:

    1. USB HDD not working with ‘uas’

Error in dmesg: “xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: ERROR Transfer event for disabled endpoint or incorrect stream ring”

    Workaround:
    Courtesy of: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1428782#p1428782

    A. Create file: /etc/init.d/ignore_uas.conf

    # sudo gedit /etc/init.d/ignore_uas.conf

    Contents of the file:
    options usb-storage quirks=Vendor_ID:Product_ID:u

    e.g.

    options usb-storage quirks=357d:7788:u

    B. Regenerate the ramdisk
    # update-initramfs -u

    2. Shutdown and Reboot shuts down but does not reboot

    3. Log out and Log in again results in Cinnamon desktop crashing and restarting in fallback mode. I am using the recommended NVIDIA drivers.

  62. Skype isn’t using the correct GTK window decorations. The usual fix of installing “gtk2-engines-murrine:i386 gtk2-engines-pixbuf:i386” isn’t helping. Does anyone have a solution?

  63. I think Linux Mint 18 KDE, should be a slim one, with less applications, similar to wath we have in Cinnamon, and Mate, something like Netrunner, but with Linux Mint Team touch and feel.

Generally, applications in KDE 5 works fine, but what it annoys me, is the widgets. Maybe you can test and include some yourself, for example, a some good weather widgets, and rewrite Shoutcast service for Amarok. Also, I think Vockoscreen should be included by default in Linux Mint KDE.

    Thank you.

  64. Some Bugs to Report they were found in Linuxmint 18 MATE 64 bit and maybe are in this release as well as the Cinnamon edition
1 Xplayer when you insert a DVD with a menu and the menu comes up with the mouse arrow you can’t click the title for example the name of the movie you want to play But VLC Media player you can and then the movie will play i do not like Xplayer for that reason unable to play DVDs with it
2 Xplayer again when you go to preferences in Xplayer’s menu and select the option to show visualizations during audio playback and select a visualization no matter which one you choose none are shown during audio playback totem on 17.3 does not have this issue or the other issue listed above
3 no tooltips for the network manager icon and if you have a wifi Connection you always see only 2 bars no more this is another bug that 17.3 does not have no matter what your wifi connection status you always only see 2 bars
the reason that i reported the bugs here is because comments are closed for 18 MATE which is a pity because I,m Sure there are more bugs next time i would suggest to keep comments for all editions open for an extra month or 2
so far Linuxmint 18 is really good a masterpiece if those 3 bugs were fixed it would be way better i have noticed with the X-APPS no version number and the same goes for the update manager i think that they should have a version number so people know which version they are running
and all system tray icons no matter what edition should have tooltips
i have noticed in 18 the removal of ubuntu-tweak from the repos
and also the removal of the getdeb repository
i wish to see those back
Thank You For your time and keep up the good work

  65. thanks very much for the new xfce! LM18 xfce 32-bit loaded onto an old ACER AOD255 1GB laptop doing encrypted disk is running quite well.

I do have the following to report:

    1) problem with network connect after hibernate. Didn’t remember wi-fi password after hibernate the first time… for users other than originally created user, inconsistent network recovery after hibernate

    2) “Welcome to the Update Manager” too large for 600 pixel high. “+” does not change window to fill screen… thanks for the new “alt-mouse grab” feature to move too tall window above top of screen which allowed this to be dealt with.

    3) Additional user’s wi-fi connect shows Ethernet symbol when actually he connecting to wi-fi. looks correct after restart. then to happens again after hibernate. information from network indicator inconsistent although connection info is correct…

many thanks again to the Linux Mint team!

  66. sorry, I see I mis-typed email in previous submission.

I will try loading the new release on another Acer so see if hibernate network issue is repeatable…

  67. RE: Clock Applet Disappearing

I can confirm that the clock applet disappears on me, as well, whenever I modify any of the “Clock” preferences, when I leave the display format on “Digital.” However, when I change the display format to something other than “Digital,” I am able to see the new formatted clock; it does not disappear. I have the 32-bit version installed on a Toshiba notebook computer.

  68. Mint 18 Xfce looking great already. Great work done Mint team ^-^. I like the new look,if you have not already checked it out go to appearance and click on the icons tab and select mint-Y so beautiful have a look–>https://postimg.org/image/szq856n5z/

Ps After installation and a successful login after a restart I’m stuck at the splash screen. Any help pls?

  69. I’ll be short.
The _sanity_, ease of use, choice, beauty and power that Mint brings
    truly honors its “refreshing” name.

It takes very special ears to listen to user wishes, flexibility to
cope with and integrate upstream (ubnutu) changes and outstanding
programming skills _and_ vision to make such a piece as Linux Mint
a reality. In the old we called that craftsmanship.

Linux Mint is a piece of art.

  70. Two more:
Clock: I would recommend like in Cinnamon a Clockformat like %a %x – %R Weekday Date – Time
    Second:
    marjan@marjan-ESPRIMO-E5625 ~ $ sudo freshclam
    [sudo] Passwort für marjan:
ERROR: /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log is locked by another process
ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile = /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).
    marjan@marjan-ESPRIMO-E5625 ~ $

  71. Fresh install on box with nvidia card. Login window are black, only cursor displayed.

In compatibility mode login works. Only after installing nvidia drivers i can login in normal boot mode.

  72. I am sorry for posting this here, but there is no KDE release post yet. What will be the AMD proprietary driver? Sadly Kbuntu won’t support it. Don’t tell me you will disable it too…I know we need to support OpenSource driver but it is far from stable at this point.

Edit by Clem: Hi, this isn’t in our hands (or in Ubuntu’s), it’s in AMD’s. This is the nature of proprietary software, nobody but the owner can modify its code, thus nobody here can make FGLRX work with newer versions of Xorg. If AMD doesn’t want to do that, your only choices are to stick to the older Xorg (i.e. Mint 17.x), or to stop using FGLRX.

  73. I have a problem with closing the lid of my laptop (HP Compaq nc6400). I generally use it with power supply plugged in, so I don’t need it to suspend/hibernate when I close the lid.

However, if I set it in Power Manager to just turn off screen or lock screen, when I open it back it works once BUT if I then close and open it again – the screen never comes back on and sometimes it seems whole system freezes( and other times it seems that just the screen doesn’t lit up, as it reacts to power button pressed).

Also one thing that ALWAYS happens, regardless what settings I have on closing the lid, is that after opening the lid back the system opens Display preferences.

  74. http://imgur.com/a/TMu2O

With compiz the system turns to very ugly. The windows decorations are the same even if i change the style. Without compiz everything is better but i need expo. The solution is the same like in Cinnamon with hot corner.

Edit by Clem: gsettings set org.gnome.metacity theme ‘Mint-X’ (or in this case ‘Mint-Y-Dark’ might be a better option).

  75. Cinnamon 32 bit – if I click on an icon on the panel and select Remove, it removes all applets and disables the menu applet. If I restore to default, the icons re-appear but are disabled.

  76. OK, here’s an update: I’ve e-mailed Graeme Gott, the developer of Whisker Menu. He was kind enough to reply almost instantly, and told me that the default setting of Whisker Menu is *not* to show generic application names….

So it turns out to be an (in my opinion unfortunate) change that the Mint devs have made. You can see all of their changes in this file: /usr/share/mint-configuration-xfce/xfce4/panel/whiskermenu-1.rc

    The relevant line is: launcher-show-name=false
(the IMO better upstream default is “true”)

It’s strange, because Mint 18 Cinnamon and Mint 18 Mate do *not* use generic application names. Why did the Mint devs change this in Xfce?

Edit by Clem: Thanks, we’ll revert this.

  77. Installed LM 18 Xfce 64-bit beta with / as btrfs. No problems. It’s a very responsive system. It took 24 min for the initial install (not including iso file d/l); ~1 hour total w/ updates.

Only minor issue found so far is probably from Xfce:
If I maximize a window vertically (or horizontally), then move it, it restores the window size to its non-maximized size.

  78. Bug:
Switching in Desktopsetting (german: Schreibtischeinstellungen, a very bad translation by the way) from xfwm to metacity and back to xfwm makes big black window bourders around Gnome3-Windows (drivemanager, catfish…)

  79. 96 jesse5567
Open settings / window / manager / advanced. Disable window snapping.

    Folks with clock problem
DateTime is available in “Add New Items” and is configurable. Or go all the way for configurability and install “orage”.

  80. I have an hp laptop was win8 now win10 want to dual boot. Have iso on flash changed bios to boot from usb no go. I can f9 and finally them when I install say no operating system so it doesn’t give option to install next to Windows. Someone can please let? It think it has to do with the win8 to win10 upgrade.

  81. Found an issue (?) in “sysinfo” app. If I select “System” in app main selection menu, the app immediately exits. Other selections work OK.
When I set “System” as default starting option, the app exits immediately on start.
The behaviour remains the same even after app remove and reinstall.

  82. To complete my post (#77), I finally got the USB key working after downloading again. Rufus downloaded a new version of syslinux as well so I don’t know what caused the problem in the first place.

  83. ITfW, thanks for the hint. I disabled both window snapping options, but it didn’t seem to work.
(It did seem to stop some other behavior: making the window maximized when I moved it above the top of the screen. But now, with the options on or off, I can’t reproduce that behavior.)

Re clock, I got similar behavior as some have noted. I just thought the clock Properties dialog was very sensitive as it changes the clock format in real time. Anyway…I am using this Custom Format:
    %a, %b %d, %G, %l:%M %p

  84. Thanks to all @ Mint esp. Clem.

I have installed LinuxMint18betaXFCE64 on my (boys old) macbook-pro.

This is the first time I have installed any Linux in parallel with an existing o/s THROUGH the installer. A complete success!

Congratulations, it can’t be easy for such a feat of logic. It installed the whole thing in the largest spare partition (no /home) (ignoring or passing a smaller, but big-enough partition) and overwrote the existing SWAP partition (which could be considered unnecessary.)

I had to add the power manager to the panel (see comments above.)

My only gripe is that Mint is still polluted (IMHO) with MONO!!!!!
However, it is the work of a minute to remove MONO through synaptic.

A REAL fault however is that Bluetooth speaker does not work. This packed up with an update during Mint17.?? and is a bit (LOT) of a BUMMER!

Bluetooth mouse however DOES work and MUCH simpler! So THANX. **

    HTH

P.S. the spell check (in Firefox) detected my misspelling of partion but didn’t offer partition.

PPS.** I hate this touchpad thingy.

  85. I take back the above re. blue-tooth speaker. It does work! However I can’t say the new GUI is easy to follow, I was confused enough to post the erroneous comment above. Mae-culpa.

PS. the spellcheck in Firefox corrects bluetooth as blue-tooth, is this correct?

PPS. Re. power manager on panel:- if check box in power manager settings for “show system tray icon” you get the icon and can remove the duplicate!

    HopeThisAlsoHelps

  86. I have the same problem as Shian (comment #79), the text under the desktop icons is not centered, but it happens with every theme I tried (Mint-X as well as Mint-Y and others); also the underlying shadow/selection box *is* centered which creates a really bad visual glitch, as you can see:
    http://hpics.li/a543c5a

  87. Please refer to:

Bottom of LibreOffice window should meet the top of the panel, but does not. The bottom of the LibreOffice window is hidden by the panel. LibreOffice and the panel are on one physical display and Linux Mint webpage shown in Firefox is on another physical display.

    Thank you

  88. I have to say GREAT JOB on this beta! Looks great run very well!
Well i am trying to report a bug. I am a little new at testing betas. but here is the only thing i have found that does not work right.
I installed with encryption, and when it comes up to input the pass code, it locks up. Now i have been able to pass this by ctr+alt+del, and going with the black screen to enter pass code. However the last time i did a reboot i had to go to recover to start the os. Any fix for this? thanks I can not wait till full version comes out.

  89. Congratulations, good work done Mint team, since 2-3 years my favorite edition is XFCE. But until I wait final (stable XFCE 18), I decide to try Mint 18 Mate (about 2 weeks ago). Don’t like it much but one thing I saw was very useful and I don’t see even in XFCE18 beta (just installed today to try before final stable release). I speak about the CPU and MB temperature sensor, which can be add to panel in Mate 18, but still not possible in XFCE 18 beta? It’s very useful especially if installed on live USB for diagnose some other PC. Can you add this in stable release?

  90. I installed XCFE beta this week and performance is great
but Thunar file manager has to go.
Can you recommend a file manager like nautilus
or anything else that would work in XCFE?

  91. Installed LM18 XFCE beta. After opening a video in VLC the drop down menu items open up behind the video. So most of the entries are not visible and hidden by the shown video.

    Regards,
    Stefan

  92. Should items be standardised, eg. “Rubbish Bin” and right clicking on the picture with “Empty Rubbish”? Perhaps it could be called “Trash” and when right-clicked “Empty Trash”? “Trash” has less characters than “Rubbish” is that is a consideration. Thank you

  93. Like how Xfce brings up a context menu when right-click and dragging on files with:
    Copy here
    Move here
    Link here
    Cancel

  94. Can I install on the “Mint 18 Cinnamon x64” – “Mint-meta-xfce”?
It will work fine Xfce and whether the compatibility problems will or other bugs?
I am able to choose when logging Desktop Manager?

  95. @121 dd: Software manager is crashing short after start.

If the team cannot reproduce the bug – they cannot fix it.

We all should remember to supply detailed report about the bugs and about our system – only this way it’ll be possible to debug.

BTW – try to do the same thing with the live session DVD and see if it also happens with a clean system – that’s useful info as well for debugging.

  96. Incorrect behavior (bug): When panel is at the top and a program, like LibreOffice, is maximized the program goes incorrectly to the top of the screen, not to the bottom of the panel.
    http://imgur.com/a/uONPb
    http://imgur.com/SqXUFRD

Correct behavior: When the panel is at the bottom of the default screen (aka display?) and a program, like LibreOffice, is maximized the program goes correctly to the top of the panel, not the bottom of the screen.
    http://imgur.com/a/uONPb
    http://imgur.com/pD2k3MP

Incorrect behaviors (bug): When the panel is at the bottom of an additional screen (aka display?) and a program, like LibreOffice, is maximized the program goes incorrectly goes to the bottom of the screen, not the top of the panel. The default display (smaller screen area) is below and the additional display (larger screen area) is above. Please refer to #115.
    http://imgur.com/a/gWtMH

  97. In desktop PC(with amd graphics) no option was available to control brightness other than AMD catalyst control center. Now in mint18 AMD catalyst control centre is not available, so Please enable or add power manager plug-in with brightness/display control(only) for desktops(no battery available). For laptop it is enabled by default to support battery.

  98. @125 shian
In live session it works. In my system i have no software installed except updates and recommended nvidia driver. My laptop is HP Compaq 6030 us.

  99. I am trying to install Mint 18 on my HP notebook. When I work through the install menu, choosing the last option, I get no option to designate where it will install, no option to set partition sizes, only a note that there is not boot sector identified. Mint sees the hard drive but no partitions thereon. It also sees my SD card as a drive.

  100. Mint 18 don’t have AMD catalyst center. So no alternative available. Is it possible to add and use KGamma in XFCE. Do XFCE have any utility to control brightness, gamma, etc.

  101. @128 dd:
To find where the problem starts, you can try the following –

    1. (Backup and then) delete all configuration files/directories under your /home directory (all hidden dirs/files), to make sure that there is no corrupt configuration file. Then try again.

    2. Remove the recommended nvidia driver – video drivers are critical part of the system and if not integrated well with your hardware they may lead to many strange bugs.

    3. Restart your system (and press Shift button…?) and choose from the grub menu the advanced/recovery item, then continue to load the system normally from the recovery menu – it may load the system without the nvidia video driver so you can see if the system works well without this driver.

    4. Reinstall the system on formated drive(s), then check if it works properly, then add item by item (update the system, nvidia driver, software, …) – and after each changes check the system again if it works properly. If it doesn’t, then you’ll be able to better isolate the bug, since it may be related to your last changes. It’s a common technique (elimination).

Eventually you and the Linux Mint team will get much better understanding of this annoying bug.

  102. Have installed Mint in a partition, looks good but I can’t, for the life of me, get the wi-fi working. What do I need to do?

  103. I did 2 upgrades on separate hard drives from LM17 to 18 Mate 64, then with some free space left over I did a clean install of 18 XFCE Beta. All good except sound not working on 1 of the Mate drives, but the other is ok. This Beta is running faster than the others with no issues, so probably a clean install of anything is the way to go. When I get a new HDD, I will make XFCE the default. Sorry to see Opera missing from the software manager. So far this beta is great, will keep using. Thank you for all your hard work, much appreciated.
How do you say XFCE in English?

I see many questions here as comments, maybe try the forum to find answer. (my 2 cents worth)

  104. thanks for XFCE! I am using the 32-bit release on old Acer laptops with 1GB or 2GB, where it is mostly working very well…

but I am having issues with hibernate; more on that some other time.

One annoying problem, that is even when running LiveUSB, the wireless connect doesn’t wait for the password to be typed but times out in less than 30-seconds, and doesn’t try after the password is completed.

  105. Important note!

To fix qt look and feel you need to install libqt5libqgtk2 package! Ship it by default please 🙂

Also review please two my PRs in GH 🙂

  106. I’ve found a few issues with the beta 64-bit iso. The system is a Dell Inspiron Model #3847, with 4th generation Core i5-4460 processor, 8G Ram, 1.0T SATA Hard drive. I have done “$sudo apt update; $sudo apt upgrade”, installed all updates, and rebooted as of Tue Aug 2 01:54:16 UTC 2016.

    1) When I click the “Shutdown” or “Reboot” buttons from the login screen, the system screen goes blank, and does *NOT* proceed to either shutdown or reboot. However, once I’m logged into the Xfce desktop, clicking Shutdown or Restart on the “Logout ‘user'” dialog, the system WILL actually either Shutdown or Restart, as appropriate.

    2) I installed google Chrome, and have gone into preferred applications & selected google Chrome as my default browser. I use Thunderbird to read my emil. When I click on URL links in my email, the link opens in Firefox.

Other than these minor quirks, I’m rather impressed with the beta.

  107. Mint 18 is the greatest! Installed it on a system with Mint 17 & XP, so I have 3 items at boot time. Also, have it as a single entry on another system. It went in very smoothly. I am going to install it on my Win 7 system very soon. My old HP LJ4 printer (ethernet connected) and my new HP OfficeJet (Wifi) 3830 were found without any problems too.

Thanks to all for the good work!

  108. Linux Mint 18 works very well on my 32 bit systems and from the DVD on my 64 bit system. Hpe to install it soon on the 64 bit system.
